You may think you don’t use the AC compressor in the winter months, however, whether it’s 90 degrees or 12 degrees, the compressor within your vehicle is necessary, not only for comfort, but also for safety purposes. When your defrost is activated, the compressor also kicks on to eliminate the humidity in the vehicle and blow warm air onto the windshield and windows to break down the frost or layers of ice on your vehicle. Your heater core is what keeps the air warm when blowing them out of the vents and the defrost. A coolant leak is a major issue that could cause health concerns and should be taken care of immediately. Some symptoms of a bad AC compressor, a failing heater core, or a coolant leak include but are not limited to the following:

• Defrost not working
• Fog coming from vents
• Sweet smell coming from vents
• Cold air in the cabin when your heat is turned on
• Cold air blowing in cabin with engine running hot
• Air not blowing cold when AC is on
• Squealing noise when first starting the vehicle with fan on high
• Low coolant could indicate a coolant leak
